What i think the best piece of advice any of us can give you going forward is that you actually have a chance to have some iota of redemption by being honest with your boyfriend right now.

I have family and a lot of friends (who he is friends with too) so I would have to go out of my way to meet someone and be secretive about it because everyone I associate with knows about the type of relationship that we have. It's scary! Very few people know him and his personal life - and even if they did "what happens in Iraq/Afghanistan stay in Iraq/Afghanistan." -That was a quote! I think in our case he would have less to worry about on my end. But in his case he will be with Canadians, Americans, Brits - lots of new people, new and stressful environment. yes, I've heard that too.

Believe me, asking for reassurance won't make you feel any better. Just work on the things I mentioned along with your self confidence and you're guaranteed to see results. You seem like a good person with low self esteem. Right now they're too much of a distraction. I think you would be nice looking if you corrected the things I mentioned. There's my honest answer.
