It isn't just to listen to music, but also to prevent men from talking to them. It's almost an unwritten law that gym pick up is in bad taste. Tons of women in gyms wear headphones now. As a personal trainer, I've worked in many gyms. So I've seen a ton of guys try to pick up women and it never goes well.

Most have girlfriends or wives and don't consider it 'cheating' at all. Truthfully....and I go to the strip bars near my house after work with the guys sometimes...the guys are male bonding with each other NOT bonding with the girls.
