He seems really afraid to just pick up the phone and call - and he's 41 years old! I got the same thing - "I really hope you're not seeing anyone else" ... It's just plain dishonest and immature. the duplicity of that is what led me to just cut him off. Really, how does this bode for any kind of a deeper relationship.
